CBS TO REVIVE 'JEFFERSON'S HUMOR WITH NEWLY ANNOUNCED SITCOM, 'THE COMPTONS'

(NEW YORK CITY) CBS Executive Charles Wrought announced Tuesday the recent development of a situation comedy in the works at the network--a show designed to be just as funny as the 1980's smash hit "The Jefferson's"--without the Jeffersons. "Everything is there," he stated. "We've got the deluxe apartment in the sky, the successful cleaners entrepreneurship, the English neighbor--everything but George, Louise, Lionel and Jennifer Jefferson."
The show, which will center around the wily, argumentative marriage of Chase and Constance Compton, is scheduled to hit the airwaves in fall of 1998, and, it is hoped, will capture the same audience that loved the spectacular humor and often serious themes explored on 'The Jeffersons.'
"I happily anticipate my portrayal of Michael Triumph," said actor Stephen Damp. "I may not end up being as popular as was Mr. Bentley..and that depresses me," he continued. "However, I am confident that Mr. and Mrs. Compton shall have greater success with the preparation of foods, both in the kitchen and on the grill, than they did back before they moved up here to the East Side."
"It took a lot of effort to consider approaching this hill," he added.
Actress Vanisha Bronze, who portrays cranky maid Collette Sanderson on the series, echoed Damps sentiments.
"I happily anticipate my portrayal of Collette Sanderson. I may not end up being as popular as was Florence..and that depresses me. However, I am confident that Mr. and Mrs. Compton shall have greater success with the preparation of foods, both in the kitchen and on the grill, than they did back before they moved up here to the East Side."
"It took a lot of effort to consider approaching this hill," she added.
Director Jeff Right described the scenario encountered during the first half of the pilot episode, which is in the works.
"Mr. and Mrs. Compton will argue," he said.
"Mr. and Mrs. Compton will make up," he added, referring to the last part of the episode.
Also planned is a Comptons episode in which Mr. Compton reflects on the framing of the first dollar bill earned at Compton's Cleaners. "In the episode, I have a flashback to the time when I took it upon myself to mount in a frame the first dollar bill earned by Compton's Cleaners," said Turk Camp, who portrays "Chase Compton" on the series. "Then I return to the present in time for the episode's conclusion," he continued.
Cleaning clothes, however, is only a marginal subject encountered on the series. "It's really more about how funny we can be in our deluxe apartment in the sky," mused Leigh Midd, portrayer of "Constance Compton," Mr. Compton's wife on the series.
"If you were to ask me right now what I thought it is that we are on the show, I would say, 'funny,' she added.
Look for "Compton's" in Autumn.
